“Liberty Through Literacy” Book Drive & Kickoff Event!

The Oregon Student Chapter of the American Library Association is proud to announce the Liberty Through Literacy Book Drive, which will take place from April 12 to May 12, 2014. Donors are encouraged to bring books to collection locations in Portland and Salem. Books will be donated to libraries at the Marion County Correctional Facility and the Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility, to aid in education and employment opportunities. The right to better oneself through education is a freedom that belongs to all people, and that education in turn benefits all people—Your books will help!

We encourage people to come by, drop off books, have a drink, and learn more about how your donations will help those in need. This is an all-ages and free event. Food and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

All books are welcome, but the librarians specifically need softcover, recently published (last 2 years), books about: art, history, journalism, law/justice system, pre-algebra, algebra, basic math, chemistry, psychology, history, biology, etc., crafts, cooking, graphic novels, biographies, Spanish language, Japanese language learner, Hi-Lo, books, a recent encyclopedia set, and young adult/adult novels.

  1. Is it possible to leave donations at the sites listed after the kick-off event? I’d love to donate, but wasn’t sure if this would be an ongoing drive or a limited-time event.

    Thanks! what a fantastic program!
