SCALA Library Prom

Thank you to everyone that attended the 2009 SCALA Library Prom. Good times were had by all and the event was, I believe, a great success. Thank you to all my fellow officers for doing a terrific job organizing the event, especially to Candise for tracking down the venue, running the Face Book page and DJing the actual event. Hopefully Library Prom will become a SCALA tradition for years to come.

SCALA Scholarship Opportunity

The Emporia State University Student Government recently awarded SCALA $1,268 to assist select students with travel costs to national and regional conferences. In an email to the SLIM listserv, Dr. Cecilia Salvatore outlined the scholarship application process:

possible. Students who will be presenting or who have formally signed
up to volunteer at these conferences will be given preference. A
committee will review the applications.

“To Apply:
Email Dr. Cecilia Salvatore (csalvato@emporia.edu) or Matt Upson
(mupson@emporia.edu) – Please label the email subject heading: “SCALA
Scholarships – Your Name”

“Provide:
1. Your contact information
2. A 2-page statement describing why you should receive financial
assistance to attend a specific conference and how attending that
conference can contribute to your professional growth
3. An abstract of your presentation (if you plan on presenting).
Remember, preference will be given to those who will be presenting.

“Deadline: If you are planning on attending the ALA annual conference

OK, I Went to Library School: Now What?

SCALA would like to thank Allie Flanary for braving the farmer’s market and making it out to PSU on Saturday to give an informal talk. Those that attended were treated to some great down-to-earth insights into the process of establishing a fledgling library career.

Because we convened outside, Allie was unable to make use of the slides she created. So for those who were unable attend, or if you want a refresher, here’s her presentation:

Speaker this Saturday!

Have class this Saturday? You should stop by and hear OR6 graduate Allie speak! Currently she’s a faculty librarian (Web & Outreach specialist) at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon. Also, she’s a past SLIM-OR SCALA president, ALA emerging leader and next-gen librarian extraordinaire. She’s a terrifically engaging speaker and so we really encourage you not to miss this event!

When? Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 12:15pm – 1:15pm.
Where? PSU Cramer 371

For more information, you can visit her PCC page http://www.pcc.edu/library/contact/profiles/allie_flanary.html and personal site http://shinylib.com/

SCALA is Selling T-shirts!

ORDERS HAVE BEEN CLOSED! THANK YOU EVERYBODY!

Help support SCALA by purchasing a t-shirt!

Do your friends question your commitment to librarianship? Prove them wrong by adorning yourself with this t-shirt bearing the visage of library icon Ranganathan:

ranganathan

(Thanks to Aaron Schmidt for the original idea and the permission to use it)

Cost: $10 for students and $12 for non-students. Shipping is an additional $5 (Though if you’re in the Portland area we can probably figure out some way to get it to you).

How to procure such merchandise? Simply email Eura at e.g.ryan@gmail.com. Be sure to tell her your size and color.

We are doing this by taking pre-orders and then ordering the shirts from the printer, so it may be a little while until you get them, but this also means you can choose whatever color you want. We plan to send off our order March 16th, so please let us know by then.

The printer uses American Apparel (wholesale catalog at http://americanapparel.net/wholesaleresources/catalog/browse.html) or stuff distributed by Think Actionwear (http://thincactionwear.com/) If you want something other than a basic t-shirt be aware that we will have to charge you the added cost of the garment and a slight surcharge for anything we have to order in quantities less than a dozen.

And remember library people: tell your friends and co-workers about this great offer! The proceeds from this sale will help our club put on more events and activities for you.
